Our country is a country of festivals. Dusserah is an important festival of the Hindus. It is also known as "Vijayadashmi'. It is a major Hindu festival that marks the end of Navratri. It falls in the month of September-October. It marks the victory of Lord Ram over the demon King Ravan. It reminds us that the good always wins and the evil has a bad end.

In this year i.e Dussehra or Vijayadashami 2021 is Celebrated on 15 October, Friday. In 2022, Dussehra or Vijayadashami Festival will be Celebrated on 5 October, Wednesday.

According to the legend, on this day Shri Ram had conquered Ravana, the king of Lanka. The joy of this victory was celebrated all over the country. The festival of Vijayadashami or Dussehra is celebrated in the memory of this day. It is also believed that during the exile of the Pandavas, Arjuna took down his Gandiva bow placed on the Shami tree and drove away Duryodhana's army and rescued King Virata's kidnapped cows. According to a legend, on this day, King Raghu, having conquered Devraj Indra, received a lot of gold coins from him and donated them.

Dussehra is celebrated with great pomp and show. Generally, it is celebrated in many parts of India. There are different ways of celebrating it. Many religious people and devotees keep a fast. Preparations for Dusserah start before many days.

The festival of Dusserah is celebrated for ten days. Nine days of this festival are celebrated by worshipping the goddess Durga and the tenth day as Vijayadashmi. Tall idols of the goddess are placed and worshipped in big ‘Pandals'. Ramleela is enacted by various artists in big grounds. People enjoy the shows. There is a lot of crowd in the markets. On purchasing of some items, a heavy discount is offered during the festival. So, the shopkeepers get a good chance of doing business.

On the tenth day of the festival, a grand fair is held. A large number of people come to visit the fair. Children enjoy a lot. They wear new clothes. There are many kinds of shops in the fair. People buy various articles from them. Children buy toys and sweets. People enjoy tasty snacks and sweets.

In the evening, the effigies of Ravan, Kumbhakaran and Meghnad are set on fire. They are stuffed with crackers. They burst with a lot of sound and light. Everybody enjoys the show. We remember Lord Ram and his goodness on this festival. The idols of goddess Durga are submerged into a pond or a river. With this, the festival comes to an end.

Nowadays people forgetting the importance of Dussehra have started giving priority to external pomp. On this day some people drink alcohol and gamble. A holy festival like Dussehra should be celebrated beautifully. The right way to celebrate this festival is to fill one's heart with good feelings like swadharma, patriotism, sacrifice, penance, charity and valor. It is said that on this day Lord Rama killed Ravana and conquered Lanka. That is why effigies of Ravana are burnt on the day of Dussehra.

The festival of Dussehra gives us the message to protect religion, justice and humanity and to be victorious in every auspicious work. People consider Dussehra to be a very auspicious day.
