IntroductionAmartya Sen is an Indian economist and philosopher. Nobel Prize is the best award in the world, it is certainly a matter of pride for both the individual and the country. Dr. Amartya Sen is also one of those geniuses who have got this distinction. He is the first Asian to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics. Dr. Amartya Sen was awarded the 'Nobel Prize in Economics' in 1998 for 'welfare economics'.
Amartya Sen's Early LifeAmartya Sen was born in a Bengali family on November 3, 1933 in Shantiniketan, Kolkata. His father's name was Ashutosh Sen and mother's name was Amita Sen. His father was a professor at Dhaka University. Later he moved to West Bengal. Guru Rabindranath Tagore had named Amartya. Sen's family was related to Wari and Manikganj (now in Bangladesh). Amartya's father Ashutosh Sen was Professor of Chemistry at Dhaka University and moved to West Bengal with the family in 1945 and served in the West Bengal Public Service Commission (Chairman) and then the Union Public Service Commission. Amartya's mother was the daughter of Kshiti Mohan Sen, a well-known scholar of ancient and medieval India and close to Rabindranath Tagore.
Dr. Amartya Sen's EducationAmartya's early education started in the year 1940 from St. Gregory's School in Dhaka. From 1941, he studied at Visva Bharati University School. They are I.S.C. Came first in the examination and then enrolled in Presidency College, Kolkata. From there he earned a BA in Economics and Mathematics. And in 1953, he went to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he did his BA in Economics again. and stood first in his class. Amartya Sen was also elected president of the Cambridge Majlis. When he was in Cambridge for his Ph.D. At the same time, he got an offer to become Professor and Head of Department of Economics from the newly established Jadavpur University. He worked here from 1956-58. It was during this time that Sen received a prestigious fellowship from Trinity College which gave him the freedom to do whatever he wanted for the next four years, after which Amartya decided to study philosophy. They have always been at the top.
In 1960-61 AD, Dr. Sen was a visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. They U. C. was also visiting professor at Berkeley and Cornell. He taught in the Delhi School of Economics from 1963 AD to 1971 AD as a professor of economics. He continued to be a visiting lecturer in many other famous universities. In 1972, he joined the London School of Economics as a professor. He also taught at Oxford University. In 2012, Dr. Sen was appointed as the first Vice Chancellor of Nalanda University in Bihar.
His professional careerAmartya Sen started his academic career as a teacher and research student at Jadavpur University. During 1960-61, he was visiting professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, where he was introduced to Paul Samuelson, Robert Solov, Franco Modigliani and Robert Weiner. He was also visiting professor at U-C Berkeley and Cornell. Between 1963 and 1971, he taught at the 'Delhi School of Economics'. During this time he was also associated with prestigious Indian educational institutions like Jawaharlal Nehru University, Indian Statistical Institute, Center for Development Studies, Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics and Center for Studies in Social Sciences. During this time scholars like Manmohan Singh, KN Raj and Jagdish Bhagwati were also teaching in 'Delhi School of Economics'. In 1972, he moved to the London School of Economics and remained there till 1977 and taught at Oxford University between 1977-86. He moved to Harvard in 1987 and was made a Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1998.
ConclusionCurrently he is Thomas W. Professor at Lemont University and Harvard University. Dr. Sen has received many awards and honors at national and international fora. In 1998, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics and Science. In 1999 AD, he was awarded 'Bharat Ratna'. We hope that he continues to guide us with his knowledge and experience.
